While it is widely believed that the Thai language originated from Pali,
Sanskrit, and Old Khmer, there are many scholars who believe that it is
a form of Chinese that was brought to Thailand between the 7th and 13th
centuries based on historical evidence and similarities. Chinese
characters were actually used during ancient times, but under the
influence of Indian traders and monks, Sanskrit and Pali scripts became
more favorable.
